Story stones are a screen-free way to build narrative skills. Each stone is a simple drawing; together, they become a story your child invents.
What you'll need
- Smooth flat stones (10-15)
- Acrylic paint or paint pens
- A small drawstring bag to store them
- Clear matte sealant (optional)
How to make it
- Wash and dry the stones thoroughly.
- Paint a simple symbol on each — a house, tree, dog, sun, car, friend, star, etc.
- Let them dry fully; seal with clear coat if you want them durable.
- Together: pull 3 stones from the bag and tell a story using those images.
- Take turns drawing and adding to the story.
Tips & variations
- Stick to recognizable basics — no need for art-class quality.
- Use them on long car rides or in waiting rooms.
- Add a 'feelings' stone (heart, frown, smile) for emotional storytelling.
Why it helps
Storytelling builds sequencing, vocabulary, and perspective-taking. The tactile element keeps young kids engaged longer than verbal-only prompts.
