Connection
Obstacle courses are one of the easiest ways to build coordination, problem-solving, and shared joy. The setup IS the play; the running of it is the bonus.
What you'll need
- Couch cushions
- A few chairs and a blanket (for a tunnel)
- Painter's tape (a 'balance beam')
- A small stuffed animal as the goal
How to make it
- Drape a blanket over two chairs to make a crawl tunnel.
- Lay couch cushions in a winding path — 'rocks across a river.'
- Tape a straight line on the floor — that's the balance beam.
- Place the stuffed animal at the end as the destination.
- Take turns going through. Time each other if competition helps; remove the timer if it stresses.
Tips & variations
- Add a 'rule' card at each station — '3 jumping jacks here', 'crawl backward.'
- Younger kids LOVE doing it slowly with parent encouragement.
- Older kids can design their own course for siblings.
Why it helps
Whole-body proprioceptive input regulates and energizes. The shared problem-solving builds connection without screens or formal play.
