Kids with attention struggles often hit a wall after 5-10 minutes. A 5-minute work / 2-minute movement / 5-minute work rotation lets them keep going without burning out.
What you'll need
- A visible timer (kitchen, phone, or a sand timer)
- A 'movement break' card stack (jumping jacks, wall pushes, animal walks)
- Their homework
How to make it
- Set the timer for 5 minutes of one homework task. Sit nearby.
- When it dings, 2-minute movement break — pull a card.
- Set the timer for another 5 minutes of the same OR a switched task.
- Keep cycling until they've earned enough sprints to finish.
- End with a celebration moment — high five, sticker, or shared snack.
Tips & variations
- Adjust the ratio (3-2-3, 10-3-10) to fit your child.
- Use the SAME timer every time — predictability lowers resistance.
- Avoid screens during the 2-minute breaks.
