Squishing dough is one of the fastest ways to ground a wired body. The repetitive squeeze-and-roll motion gives proprioceptive input through the hands, which signals the nervous system to settle.
What you'll need
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup salt
- ½ cup warm water
- 1 tablespoon vegetable or olive oil
- A few drops of food coloring (optional)
- A splash of essential oil — lavender or peppermint (optional)
How to make it
- Mix flour and salt in a bowl.
- Add warm water, oil, and any color or scent. Stir to combine.
- Knead for 2–3 minutes until smooth. If sticky, add a sprinkle of flour. If crumbly, a splash of water.
- Let your child knead, roll, pinch, and stamp. Keep it in a sealed bag or container for up to 2 weeks.
Tips & variations
- Add dried lavender, glitter, or rice for new textures.
- Use cookie cutters and a rolling pin for fine-motor practice.
- Hide small objects inside and let kids dig them out.
Why it helps
Kneading dough is heavy hand-work that builds the same muscles kids need for handwriting later. The slow, repetitive motion is regulating — many children naturally choose it when they're overstimulated.
Safety note
Salt content is high — supervise children who still mouth materials.
