A calming jar (sometimes called a glitter jar or breathing jar) is a beloved tool because the swirling glitter naturally slows down — and so does anything you watch closely while it does.
What you'll need
- A clear plastic bottle or jar with a tight lid
- Warm water
- Clear glue or glitter glue (about ⅓ of the bottle)
- Fine and chunky glitter
- Optional: a drop of food coloring
How to make it
- Fill the bottle ⅓ full with warm water.
- Add the glue and shake to combine. More glue = slower swirl.
- Add glitter to taste, then top off with more warm water leaving a tiny bubble of air.
- Hot-glue or super-glue the lid shut so it can't open during a storm of feelings.
Tips & variations
- Pair with breathing: "Watch the glitter settle while you breathe in for 4, out for 4."
- Make several with different colors and let your child pick which one fits the moment.
- Keep one in the calm corner and one in the car.
Why it helps
Visual focus on a slow-moving point physically slows breathing and heart rate. The jar gives a dysregulated child something to do with their hands and eyes that doesn't require words.
Safety note
Glue the lid shut and use plastic — not glass — for younger kids.
