Calm-Down Glitter Jar

Self-regulation
When feelings get too big to talk about, having a visual anchor helps. Watching glitter slowly settle gives the nervous system something steady to focus on while breathing slows down.
What you'll need
- A clear plastic bottle with a tight lid
- Warm water
- Clear glue or glitter glue (about ⅓ of the bottle)
- Fine glitter (1-2 tablespoons)
- Optional: a drop of food coloring
How to make it
- Fill the bottle ⅔ full with warm water.
- Add clear glue until the bottle is almost full.
- Sprinkle in the glitter and optional food coloring.
- Seal the lid tightly (glue gun the cap shut if needed).
- Shake to test — the slower the glitter falls, the more glue you need.
Tips & variations
- Use it during transitions or right after a meltdown — not in the heat of it.
- Pair with 'breathe in while I shake, breathe out while it falls.'
- Keep one in the car for tough drop-offs.
Why it helps
Following the falling glitter is a single-focus, no-pressure activity. It gives the parasympathetic nervous system time to come back online and signals 'I'm safe again' without words.
Safety note
Use a plastic bottle, not glass. Seal the lid securely.
